The Big 3-0!!!

I cannot believe that I have just endured my 30th birthday and do not feel any different or any older! But, wow, when I think about 30, it just doesn't feel like I'm talking about myself or that I should be in that category. Isn't it sad that as you get older, the birthdays get less exciting and a lot of times are not given the party they deserve? 5 year olds get princess parties, shouldn't 30 year olds be made to feel like princesses too? Just a thought. So, for my birthday I received the gift of high speed internet. I called yesterday and they came and hooked it up today. And I received the promise of a new camera when we get our income tax return (too bad we still have to round up some w-2s and get the taxes done!) I had also received some birthday money from Jamie and some from mom and dad. So, I went to Wal Mart in Nogales to see if they had the cartridge that I wanted for my Cricut. Not only did they have the one I wanted, they had it on sale for $45 (regularly $60 at Wal Mart and like $80 at Michaels.) Yipee!

Good Bye Pinetop, Hello Mexico............well, almost!

We just made the move from the beautiful mountains of Pinetop to Rio Rico, AZ which is practically Nogales which is right on the Mexico border. It is such a different experience. Spanish is the language primarily spoken here and I know just the few words that Dora the Explorer has taught me while watching with Scotty. The first time we went to Wal Mart in Nogales, we were the only white faces in the entire place! We went to church last Sunday and it was so wierd. They say something in either English or Spanish and then have to translate it to the other. And singing the hymns was next to impossible. All I could hear was the Spanish words and felt like I kept losing my place. There seems to be only one other younger English speaking couple in our ward. They weren't there last week but they do have a 3 year old little boy. So, hopefully our little boys can be friends. I keep thinking that the only way I'm going to be able to stay sane is to have the internet and blogging but any high speed internet we can get here is freakin expensive to get hooked up and then we'd have to pay $60 a month! (I'm on my parents computer at their house right now.) AAAaarrrgggghhhh! Derrick really wants dial up so that we can save money but does my sanity mean nothing to him???? I really would be neglecting my child for hours if I had to wait for freakin dial up to bring my sites up. I don't know what to do? I did find out that they have story time at their itsy bitsy local library that I can take Scotty to on Wednesday mornings. Maybe there will be some younger border patrol wives there that will take pity on me and be my friends. Hopefully I'm just anxious and missing my old life and that things will actually be great for us there.

I Am a Mother

My visiting teachers gave me the book "I Am a Mother" by Jane Clayson Johnson for Christmas. It is such a great book. For any mothers who sometimes feel that the work that they do at home isn't praiseworthy, you need to read this book. For any mothers who feel embarrassed to tell others that their profession is a "mother," this book is for you. For any mother out there anywhere, this book is for you!!! While working in an OB/GYN office, I saw many instances where women seemed embarrassed to write MOTHER as their occupation. Many would try to make up a name for it that would sound more "important" like Domestic Engineer.

In this book, the author writes about her experience in leaving a high profile job in television news to be a stay at home mother. After a dinner, each of the people were asked to introduce him or herself. She writes how many women described themselves: "Oh, I'm just a mom.", "I don't have any credentials; I'm just raising our six children.", "My life's not very exciting right now; I'm just a stay-at-home mom.", and "I don't have very much to offer here. I'm just a mother." The author asked herself, "What have I done?" And later, "Could they be right? Is it possible that motherhood is an insignificant, second-rate occupation?"

She goes on to write, "What I have since learned is that God's definition of motherhood and the world's definition are vastly different. And sometimes--probably all too often--the challenges, daily physical and emotional exhaustion, and occasional self-doubt that come along with being a mother cause many of us to buy into an inaccurate and destructive understanding of our role. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of joy--or fullfillment--associated with the world's interpretation of motherhood."

"But when we trust in the arm of the Lord rather than the voices of the world, everything changes. Elder Neal A Maxwell observed, "When the real history of mankind is fully disclosed, will it feature the echoes of gunfire or the shaping sound of lullabies? The great armisticies made by military men or the peacemaking of women in homes and in neighborhoods? Will what happened in cradles and kitchens prove to be more controlling than what happened in congress?"

Later, she quotes Elder Jeffrey R Holland: "You are doing God's work. You are doing it wonderfully well. He is blessing you, and He will bless you, even-no, especially-when your days and your nights may be most challenging. Like the woman who anonymously, meekly, perhaps even with hesitation and some embarrassment, fought her way through the crowd just to touch the hem of the Master's garment, so Christ will say to the women who worry and wonder and weep over their responsibility as mothers, 'Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole.' And it will make your children whole as well"

The author writes: A "co-partner with the Creator himself." That is a mother. We are mothers. The next time someone inquires what you do or asks you to describe yourself, would you say with confidence and with joy, "I am a Mother"?

Just a little example of the great encouragement that this book holds for all of us who are mothers and even those who aspire to be mothers.

Gossip Girl

I love this show! I know that I'm almost 30 and should probably be steering away from the teenage soap shows, but I just love this show. Coming from the Dawson's Creek era, I can say that this show is smarter, has a much more interesting story, MUCH cuter clothes/hair and can I say that the actors and actresses are MUCH hotter. I never got into the OC craze but I do know which actors/actresses starred in that one and Gossip Girl has so much more!!!
I could even venture to say that I would enjoy seeing one or more of the actors in this show playing one/some of the vampires or characters (whether good or bad) in the Twilight movie. I know everyone has their own views and opinions on the Twilight movie. I'm probably biased because I love watching this show way too much for someone my age!!!
